突然の衝撃音とともに機内は重力を失った。%K%P Abruptly, there was an unexpected noise, and then the inside of the plane lost gravity. 膝の上に置いたファイルがふわりと宙を舞い、一瞬の静止状態を挟んでバサリと足元に落ちた。%K%P The file on my lap slowly floated into the air before me, pages fluttering as if to take off, and then fell from midair with a thud, as though tired and gasping for air. 再び、氷上を滑るかのごとくなめらかな飛翔が続いた。%K%P But before it could recover, the file crashed abruptly to my feet. The plane felt like it was drifting on ice. かと思うと、いきなり地の底へと引きずり込まれるようなマイナスの加速度に襲われるのだった。%K%P As soon as that thought crossed my mind, the plane was once again pulled down with a frightening strength, as if it wanted to take us down into the bowels of the Earth. 機体が上下に揺れるたびに、あちこちから小さな悲鳴があがった。%K%P Screams could be heard from every direction whenever the cabin shook. 悲鳴の後には張りつめた緊張感だけが残った。%K%P And mingled with the screams, an undercurrent of fear saturated the air. ゆに「こころ～ん……怖いよぉ……」%K%P Kokoron... I'm scared... ゆにが私の胸に抱きついてくる。%K%P Yuni clung tightly to my chest. 私は彼の肩に腕をまわしてこう言った。%K%P I placed my arm around his shoulder and tried to calm him down. こころ「ねえ？ 去年１年間に国内で発生した交通事故による死亡者の数って知ってる？」%K%P You know what? Did that calm you down? ゆには答えない。%K%P Yuni didn't reply. 私の胸に顔を埋めたままブルブルと身体を震わせていた。%K%P He simply buried his face in my chest as he trembled all over. 時計台の鐘が厳かに鳴り渡った。%K%P The bell in the clock tower echoed solemnly. 俺は腕時計を確かめた。%K%P <i>I</i> checked my wristwatch. １６時ちょうど――。%K%P Just about 4 o'clock―― 時計台は１秒の狂いもなく正確に時を告げていた。%K%P The clock tower told the time with not a minute of deviation. 年老いた男のしゃがれ声のような、ザラザラと錆びついた金属音だった。%K%P A metallic sound that was like the coarse voice of an aged man alerted me of the hour at hand. 強風に煽られた雪のカケラが鐘の音にあわせて乱舞する。%K%P The snow danced violently to the sound of the bell as the raging winds stirred it. キラキラと輝く光の粒子……。%K%P Though what <i>I</i> saw... were twinkling and sparkling particles of light.... 俺には、福音の訪れに歓喜を示す無数の天使の舞踏に見えた。%K%P An infinite number of angels dancing and rejoicing at the advent of a great gospel. 悟「待ってろよ……」%K%P Just wait... 悟「もうすぐだ……」%K%P Just a little bit longer... 悟「もうすぐ……おまえに……」%K%P Just a little bit longer... until you... 禍々しく澱んだ空に稲光が走る。%K%P A bolt of lightning streaked across the ominous sky. 猛り狂ったその咆哮に聖なる鐘の音は打ち消された。%K%P The sound of the holy bell was denied by a roar filled with rage. 雷鳴は立て続けに二度三度と響き渡り、大地はおぞましいうめき声に震えた。%K%P The thunder continued resounding in succession: two times, three times; and the earth shook in unison each time, letting out a hateful groan. 閃光があたりを蒼白く染める。%K%P The flashes illuminated the sky with pale light. その刹那――。%K%P Then―― 光に浮かび上がった黒い影を、俺は見逃さなかった。%K%P A shadow that <i>I</i> couldn't miss appeared in the light. 影は俺の背後から足元に向かって伸びていた。%K%P The shadow came up from behind me and stretched toward my feet. 悟「誰だ……！？」%K%P Who's there...?! 機体は高波に翻弄される小舟のように上下左右に激しく揺れた。%K%P The cabin of the plane pitched violently back and forth, as if giant waves were making sport of a small boat. なす術のない乗客達が哀れな悲鳴をあげる。%K%P The passengers, powerless to do anything, let out pitiful screams. 中には泣き声をもらす者や、叫び出す者や、祈りの言葉を呟く者もいた。%K%P In the midst of it were voices crying, voices screaming, voices praying. 私は窓の外をのぞき込んだ。%K%P I looked out the window. いつの間にこれだけ高度が下がったのだろう、彼方はどんよりと濁った鈍色の世界だった。%K%P I wondered when we had fallen to our current altitude. The world outside had turned a muddled gray. //old: Visibility only returned after falling to this height; then, all of a sudden, the world turned a muddled gray. //how's this? 霧に覆われた視界の向こうに、張り出した片翼が見えた。%K%P The tips of the airplane's wings went beyond the fog covering my field of vision. 翼は今にも折れんばかりの角度で大きく弓なりにしなっていた。%K%P The wings were now bending inward like a huge bow might, looking as if they could break off any second. 私は素早くゆにの身体をひきはがした。%K%P I quickly pulled Yuni off me. ベルトの端を思い切り引いて、彼を座席に固定する。%K%P I pushed him into his seat and tightened his seatbelt with all my strength. こころ「もしも何かあったら、こうやって、だんご虫みたいに丸くなるのよ？ いい？」%K%P In case something happens, curl up like this, the way a pill bug does, okay? ゆに「もしも！？ もしもってどういうこと！？」%K%P In case something happens?! What something?! ゆに「この飛行機おちちゃうの！？ 墜落しちゃうの！？」%K%P Is this airplane gonna crash?! こころ「大丈夫よ」%K%P It's going to be all right. こころ「大丈夫だけど、念の為……ね？」%K%P Everything's going to be all right, but... just to be safe... okay? ゆに「やだやだぁー！」%K%P No, nooo! ゆに「怖いよぉー！ こころーん！ こころーん！」%K%P I'm scared! Kokoron! Kokoron! ゆにが再びすがりついてくる。%K%P Yuni clung tightly to me once more. 私はその肩を背もたれに押しつけて言った。%K%P I forcefully pushed his shoulders back against his seat and tried to calm him down again. こころ「ゆにくん！ お願いだから、お姉ちゃんの言うこときいて！」%K%P Yuni-kun! Do Onee-chan a favor and please listen to what she says! こころ「ちゃんと自分の席に座ってるの、わかった！？」%K%P Just stay there and don't leave your seat, understand?! ゆに「どうして！？ なんでダメなの！？」%K%P Why?! Why can't I?! ゆに「こころん、どっか行っちゃうの！？」%K%P Kokoron, are you going somewhere?! ゆに「ぼくを置いてかないで！ ひとりぼっちにしないで！」%K%P Don't leave me! Don't leave me all alone! こころ「ふふっ、どこにも行ったりしないわよ」%K%P Don't be silly, I'm not going anywhere. こころ「降ろしてくれって頼んでも、無駄だろうしね」%K%P Hey, even if I wanted to, there's nowhere else I can go now, right? ゆに「でも……」%K%P But... こころ「ほら、男の子でしょう？ そんな泣きそうな顔するんじゃないの」%K%P Come on, be a man. Don't you start crying on me like that. こころ「約束通り、ちゃんと手つないでてあげるから、ね？」%K%P Look, I'll hold your hand. Just like I promised, okay? 私はゆにの手のひらをしっかりと握りしめた。%K%P I firmly clenched Yuni's hand. ゆにの潤んだ瞳からはポロポロと大粒の涙がこぼれ落ちていた。%K%P Large teardrops tumbled from Yuni's watery eyes. 一瞬、窓の向こうに稲妻――。%K%P For an instant, a flash of lightning rushed through the sky outside the window. その直後に訪れたのはバキバキと噛み砕くような轟音だった。%K%P A thunderous snapping, crunching roar followed. 私は思わず視線を伏せた。%K%P I reflexively turned my eyes downward. 足元にはファイルが転がっていた。%K%P The file was at my feet. 無造作に開かれた白いページが冷たい雷火に照らされていた。%K%P The white page before my eyes was illuminated by the lightning. 悟「誰だ……！？」%K%P Who's there...?! 勢いよく振り返り声をあげた。%K%P <i>I</i> turned around, saying this as forcefully as <i>I</i> could. 扉の前にぼんやりと人影……。%K%P There was the faint shadow of a person in front of the door.... しかし吹きつける雪に妨げられて、顔立ちを確かめることはできなかった。%K%P However, the fierce wind and the dancing snow prevented me from seeing who it was. 顔立ちどころか輪郭さえも、白い煙にかすんで見えない。%K%P Even the silhouette was impossible to make out through the thick white curtain of snow. 悟「誰なんだ……」%K%P Who is it...? 再び問いかける。%K%P <i>I</i> called out once again. 人影は答えない。%K%P The shadow gave no answer. ゆっくりとこちらに向かって近づいてきた。%K%P It was slowly moving closer. 俺は正体のわからぬその影におびえた。%K%P Feelings of fear and distress began to grow inside of me. じりじりと後ずさり、屋上の隅へと追いつめられる。%K%P <i>I</i> was backed up into a corner of the roof by the mysterious shadow as it slowly drew nearer and nearer. 影は歩みを止めなかった。%K%P The shadow didn't stop. 彼方にイカヅチのほむらがきらめく。%K%P Lightning bolts glittered in the distance like flames. 研ぎ澄まされたヤイバが大地を打つ。%K%P The well-honed blade struck the earth. 逆光に浮かびあがるシルエット――。%K%P A silhouette could be made out in the backlight―― そのとき……俺は影の正体をようやく……。%K%P In that instant... <i>I</i> finally figured out what that shadow really was.... 今までを超える衝撃に機体が大きく傾いた。%K%P Reeling from the greatest shock yet, the airplane sunk rapidly. もはや制御不能に陥っていることは一目瞭然だった。%K%P By now it was clear: the crew had no control over the plane. バランスを失った小さな機体が蛇のごとくにのたうちまわる。%K%P The small craft lost its balance completely, writhing and twisting like a snake. 照明が消えた。あたりは闇。金切り声が耳を刺す。%K%P The lights had died. Darkness was all around. The sounds of shrieks and screams stabbed at my ears. 狂人のたけり。どこからか風。油の匂いが鼻腔を突いた。%K%P A maddened passenger began screaming. A strong jet of air could be felt blowing in from somewhere. Kokoron... ゆに「死にたくない、死にたくない、死にたくない、死にたくない」%K%P I don't want to die, I don't want to die, I don't want to die, I don't want to die... 高度はぐんぐんと下がっている。%K%P Our altitude continued to drop. 機体は最後の抵抗を試みるかのごとく懸命にもがき暴れ続けた。%K%P The airplane struggled violently in a last-ditch effort at resistance. いまや炎は内部にまで侵蝕し、天井をなめるように私達の頭上まで迫っていた。%K%P By now the flames had reached the inside of the cabin, and, sadistically licking the ceiling, drew ever closer to our heads. こころ「大丈夫……私を信じて！」%K%P It's going to be all right... trust me! こころ「必ず守ってみせるから！」%K%P I'll definitely protect you! 私はゆにの手のひらを力強く握りしめた。%K%P I held Yuni's hand tightly.
