晩／ばん
現在では夜全体を意味することもあるが、
本来は黄昏時から日没後まだ間もない
夜の初め頃のことをさす。

Even though the term is now used to mean night in general, 
originally it was used to describe the period of time between twilight and sunset;
in other words, the time when night begins.
