ホワイトアウト
吹雪で舞い上がった雪が原因で、
視界が白く閉ざされる現象。
高低や方向・距離がわからなくなり、
言わば“白い闇”となる。
雪表面や雲の乱反射などが原因で
発生するケースもあり、
その場合、空間が白光で満ちてしまうため、
一切、情報がわからなくなり、
身動きが取れなくなる。

A weather condition in which the field
of vision is obscured by white due to
windblown snow in the air, greatly diminishing
one's ability to discern vertical/horizontal
directions and distance. It can be described
as a "white darkness" of sorts.%N
There is also another form of a whiteout
which is caused by diffuse reflections from
snowy surfaces, clouds, and the like.
In this case, the air becomes saturated with
white light, rendering movement and the gathering
of visual information virtually impossible.
